Dr. Sketchys [Aug. 18th, 2009|01:48 pm]
[Tags|, ]

Went to Dr. Sketchys in Seattle last night!

I need more practice with lifedrawing, especially at the short poses, but here are some of the drawings I am not ashamed of.

model with shell, 9 min.

model with stuffed 'tiger shark', 20 min.

It was a three hour session, but honestly the time just flew by. Its too bad they only hold a Dr. Sketchys once a month.

sketches [Dec. 7th, 2007|11:22 am]

When I cant think of anything to draw (and my Idea File is empty) I usually kick start things by just sketching a whole bunch. Getting my pencil moving is usually all it takes for ideas to flow.

These sketching sessions usually cover a couple pages, mostly because once I have a sketch or two on one page I like start a fresh sheet. (I hate when drawings unintentionally overlap.) This particular sketch session didn't result in a 'finished' drawing (I.E. inked and stuff) so I just scanned in some of the choicer bits and compiled them into this sketch medley.

Anyway, the dark blue lines were done in 0.5 colored mechanical pencil lead. It is nice to sketch with, because its sorta waxy, but you cant draw on top of it with regular pencil or even ink. Its fine for just messing about.

I also did some sketching with Non-Photo Blue pencils, which you can draw on top of. They're really light and soft, so you have to sharpen them all the time. You can sorta see the lines from that behind the regular pencil sketches. (They're called 'Non-photo blue' because they wont show up on a black and white scan.)

I've been hearing good things about sketching with Col-Erase color pencils. I'll have to see about getting some. What do you guys prefer when you're sketching?

Psychonauts, in progress [Nov. 7th, 2007|12:57 pm]

Couldn't think of anything to draw. In times like this I turn to my Idea File. It is a simple text document which I type short ideas for future drawings. Lets see what it says today.

"Psychonauts"

Oh yeah. I've been meaning to draw some Psychonauts fanart for a while. Lets see what I can do.

I inked on a separate page from my pencils, using a lightbox.

Man I love this game. I need to find my disks so I can install it on my new machine. Haven't played it? You're missing out.

Official Psychonauts site

I'll do some minor editing and color it this evening.

the cake is a lie [Oct. 29th, 2007|01:24 pm]

Been playing The Orange Box all weekend. To that end, I did not allot much time for drawing, but I did make this little sketch of myself as a character from Portal.

Wait, does this count as a Halloween-costume themed post?

I really enjoyed Portal, not just for the physics-based puzzle solving, but also for the humor. During one point you have to get through areas guarded by auto-turrets. They have some... interesting dialog, especially when you disable them.

I extracted some of the sound files so you can hear them for yourself.
