Do It Yo-self [Aug. 26th, 2009|08:14 am]
[Tags|, , ]

Ive been messing about with screenprinting, laying the screen directly onto the fabric. That works, but tends to smear. You get a better result using a press to maintain a little standoff betweeen the screen and the fabric.

I did a little looking around the internet, but even the smaller presses are pretty pricy considering their simple construction. I could easily make one using scrapwood I had laying about.

Looking back, I probably should have driven the screws for the pad up from the bottom, so as to leave the working surface unmarred. Oh well, i'll keep that in mind for Screenpress Ver. 2.

Complete! I'll put art supplies or something in it, and give it a good spot on the shelf.

Now I feel bad that he is just a head. Maybe I should build a body for him...

Homemade siege engine [Dec. 17th, 2007|11:05 am]

Too busy to draw all last week (army stuff took precedence) but I did pick up some free time over the weekend (not that 'weekend' means anything over here) so we finally got to do something we had been talking about for a while.

Building a trebuchet.

Picture of myself (on left) and K, my partner in this endeavor, standing proud in front of our baby.

We took a couple videos of the thing in action, and it is SWEET. For ammo we had a couple practice hand grenades and some cans of soda.

Disappointingly, our projectiles are too small and moving too fast to be seen in these small videos. I was really hopeful for the soda one too, because it burst on impact and made a really nice splash. You can kind of hear it hit right before K throws his arms up in victory. The force of the impact shredded the can.

We paced out the distance afterward and found that we achieved a little over 200 meters for the soda. One of our grenades overshot the far wall (250+ meters) and landed in the parking lot. Luckily for us we have a pretty large parking lot and all of our trucks were parked against the far end. (Not that we could do much to an armored vehicle, but we wouldn't want to crack a windshield.)

Not all went smoothly! Our early sling design didn't work out so well, tossing our test load straight up. (Which resulted in some frantic scrambling for our lives.)

Buoyed by the success of this project, K and I are planning something a little more complicated for next time. Namely, A ballista.
